Retention is a ratio of how much submitted business pays through the 4th month. It is a rolling evaluation period that is determined by going back 6 months from current month, and the submit months being evaluated are the 6 months prior to that month. For example, April 2002 AP&P reports reflect an evaluation period of May 2001 to October 2001.

Any application submitted during those months is being evaluated to determine if premiums were paid through the 4th month. If so, there is a positive impact to retention. If not, there will be a negative impact. Policies can be reinstated to improve retention, however, the positive impact is to the original writing agent even if recoded at time of reinstatement.
